Quick Guide
  • Treat Linux and Steam Deck settings as player-reported workarounds. A game window appearing is not proof that clicks, drag-and-drop, sliders or Steam identity work.
  • Reports describe Proton 10.0-4 helping mouse input and a GE-Proton overlay option helping transparency. Results conflict across setups, and the exact option appears with its limits below.

Identify the failing layer

The application, input mapping and desktop overlay can fail independently. In the Linux compatibility thread, the original poster describes a visible window with music, but clicks passing through to the desktop and minimizing the game. A Linux Mint reply says it reached the end of the demo while dragging, sliders and the map still malfunctioned. Those are partially working sessions, not simple launch failures. Keep the exact symptom before trying a runtime change.

Use the retail listing for app 4623570 when reading reports. A ProtonDB link for another package or add-on is not evidence for this application. This article uses community observations rather than an official Linux build or a reproduced Deck certification; an aggregate compatibility label cannot replace the input checks below.

What the reports actually say

Source-specific results; do not combine them into one universal setup
ReportReported configurationOutcome or limit
zb.shabs, Linux thread, June 23CachyOS; Proton 10.0-4Reported missing clicks fixed
Draken, June 19CachyOS; GE-Proton10-34Reported play working except overlaying other windows
Zonk, September 30 / edited October 1Nobara 44 KDE Wayland; GE 11.7 plus overlay launch optionReported running; hardware weakness still mentioned
Nerfzul, captured ProtonDB reportLinux Mint 22.3; Proton 9.0-4Could play, but item drag remained unresolved
valleyq, captured ProtonDB reportCachyOS; Proton 10.0-4Mouse worked after switching; focus issue led to fullscreen
ffsry, captured ProtonDB reportGE-Proton11-1 plus overlay optionTransparency worked, but severe responsiveness problems were reported

The June posts include demo-period behavior, whereas later reports discuss the retail launch period. A date and a runtime number are part of the observation, not proof that your distribution, compositor and input hardware behave identically. The captured ProtonDB page also contains duplicated display blocks and inconsistent hardware fields, so this guide does not turn those fields into a requirements table. The meaningful evidence is the author’s stated symptom and workaround.

Try the reported Deck mouse path

Record the starting configuration

Write down the forced compatibility version, controller layout, launch options and whether you use Gaming Mode or a desktop session. Keep a screenshot so you can reverse the change.

Inspect the compatibility runtime

In the game’s Steam Properties, open Compatibility. ApolloTrail reports forcing Proton 10.0-4 for click/Steam-identity problems. Test it only if available, and change this layer before adding an overlay option.

Inspect the controller layout separately

On Deck, the launch guide reports the Mouse Only template. Compare it with the current controller mapping; the template provides pointer input and does not change which Proton runtime launches the game.

Prove normal clicking

Open a harmless menu, select a tab and close it. Check that clicks reach the game rather than the desktop. Do this before buying, selling or deleting anything.

Prove dragging safely

Use an operation whose destination is clear. Do not test by dragging an item out of the bag: ApolloTrail reports that action destroys it. If drag remains broken, do not proceed to gem or inventory operations that depend on it.

Restore if worse

Return to the recorded runtime or layout if the symptom worsens. Preserve the hero and save while troubleshooting input.

This sequence is a controlled diagnostic routine, not a hands-on Deck test performed for this article. A runtime may fix clicks while a controller layout still lacks the intended click mapping. Conversely, moving a pointer successfully does not prove the application receives the press-and-hold operation needed to drag. Distinguish those results in your notes.

Transparency is a separate experiment

A September 28 Steam discussion recommends GE-Proton 11-1 or newer and the launch option WINE_LAYERED_OVERLAY_ALPHA=1 %command%. A later Nobara reply names GE 11.7 with that option. These are player reports of a layered-window workaround; they are not official Deskrawl launch requirements. Preserve existing launch options and test this separately from the controller layout.

Reported performance conflict

The captured ProtonDB report by ffsry says the overlay option fixed transparency but substantially reduced overall responsiveness, especially with more than one desktop game running. The author instead used winecfg virtual desktops. That is a report of another workaround, not a validated installation recipe.

If transparency improves but the desktop or mouse becomes noticeably sluggish, record both outcomes rather than calling the change a success. Compare the same scene with the option present and removed. Check whether another desktop game was running during the bad result. Do not keep an unusable overlay just because the background finally looks right; normal interaction is part of the compatibility requirement.

Before a long farming or inventory session

  • Open and close Settings without accidental clicks reaching another application.
  • Move a harmless slider and confirm its value can be changed deliberately.
  • Select a map or menu entry and return without losing focus.
  • Verify the safe inventory interaction you need; launch and combat alone do not prove gem dragging works.
  • For an online hero, test the relevant Steam connection with the same owned account. The Windows old-client hotfix and a Linux runtime issue are different diagnoses.
  • Compare normal desktop responsiveness before and after an overlay workaround.

When reporting a remaining problem, include app 4623570, installed build, distribution or SteamOS version, session mode, runtime, layout, exact launch option and the smallest failing action. A description such as “menu clicks work, item drag fails” is more useful than “Linux broken.” None of the reports supplies measured current Deck battery life, frame-rate guarantees or touchscreen verification.

Compatibility questions

Q: Is Proton 10.0-4 a guaranteed fix?

No. It has successful mouse-input reports on CachyOS and launch-guide recommendations. Mint and overlay reports show that other interactions can remain broken.

Q: Should I add the transparency option immediately?

Test ordinary input first. The option has both transparency-success and severe-performance reports; preserve and compare settings rather than applying several changes together.

Q: Does a ProtonDB tier mean Deck Verified?

No. Community compatibility reports and Valve’s Deck review are separate evidence. This article makes no current Deck certification claim.

Q: Can I use the game if item dragging is still broken?

You may be able to fight or navigate, but you have not established the inventory operations your build needs. Avoid destructive drag tests and report the specific failed action.
