- The community reference unlocks Nightmare after Lord of the Cinder on Normal and Inferno after the same boss on Nightmare; switch while in town. Higher difficulty changes enemy scaling and reward categories, so retest the full loop instead of multiplying an old XP-per-hour figure.
Unlock the next difficulty at the final boss, then switch in town
Wikily’s difficulty page describes three modes: Normal, Nightmare and Inferno. Defeat Lord of the Cinder at The Cinder Crown: 7 on Normal to unlock Nightmare; defeat the same final boss on Nightmare to unlock Inferno. It states that difficulty can be changed only while in town. A completed region earlier in the route is therefore a different milestone from the final-boss condition.
Read the table as a dated community reference for the difficulty system, not a guarantee of the exact server values for an online character. The source explicitly distinguishes server-planned online values. Before moving a farming loop, inspect the mode label in town and verify which stage you are about to repeat. Keeping the old difficulty selected after an unlock and selecting the new difficulty are separate actions.
Enemy scaling and reward categories by difficulty
| Mode | Unlock | Enemy level | Health / damage multiplier | Experience multiplier | Stage bonus and new drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Available initially | Stage’s listed level | 1× / 1× | 1× | No per-map-level bonus |
| Nightmare | Final boss cleared on Normal | 70 outside the Rift | 3.5× / 1.35× | 1.5× | Per Normal map level: +0.5% gold, +0.5% item find, +1 item level; Black Mist |
| Inferno | Final boss cleared on Nightmare | 70 outside the Rift | 6× / 1.8× | 2× | Per Normal map level: +1% gold, +1% item find, +2 item levels; Divine and Set Runes |
Enemy level and map level are different inputs
On Normal, an ordinary encounter can use enemies between the stage’s low and high levels, while elites and bosses use the high end. The community reference describes all enemies outside the Mythic Rift on Nightmare and Inferno as level 70. That does not make every region identical. The stage’s Normal map level remains relevant to the listed difficulty reward bonus, and some enemies use different base stats in the higher modes.
For example, the loot reference says that a stage with a lowest Normal enemy level of 60 receives a 1.6 multiplier from the Inferno stage bonus before Item Find is considered. That is the reference’s calculation for selected loot weights, not a statement that 60% of all encounters give the item you want. Preserve which quantity is being multiplied: a rarity weight, a gold bonus and a final normalized probability are different values.
If you return to an early region on Nightmare, do not use the Normal enemy-level row as a survival forecast. A familiar region name can conceal a very different combat scale. Check your actual recovery, damage output and interruptions before leaving that new configuration unattended. This is especially important when you are interpreting an old guide written during an earlier patch.
Black Mist, Divine gear and Set Runes are distinct changes
The final-boss quest messages provide a second community-source description of the unlocks. After Normal, Lady “Shadow” explains that Legendary equipment can appear under Black Mist in the world and her wares. After Nightmare, the message names Inferno and Divine equipment. These are named equipment systems to inspect, rather than a promise that a first higher-difficulty clear produces a specific item.
Wikily’s difficulty listing also names Set Runes as an Inferno drop category. A rune set is a build condition to investigate separately from ordinary rarity upgrades. Before reserving resources for an item, read its class restriction, slot and effect. Merely opening a harder mode does not establish that every drop will fit your hero or replace the current equipment. For a recipe or entry component, keep the named material purpose separate from equipment quality.
When a newly unlocked difficulty is worth trying
| Observed problem or goal | First action | What would change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| New difficulty is unlocked but loop was barely stable | Try it while present; keep the previous sustainable node recorded | Deaths, potion depletion or long town delays argue for rebuilding recovery first |
| Need the new equipment category | Inspect the relevant drop and class conditions in the new mode | An accessible category does not establish a practical hourly yield |
| Need an ordinary gathering material | Locate a stage that lists the material | A harder mode is useful only if the actual loop and material result support the goal |
| Want more XP per hour | Compare complete sessions with the same character configuration | The listed XP multiplier can be outweighed by slower kills or recovery downtime |
| Want to enter Mythic Rift | Check Inferno, hero level and The Brave Memorial | Rift access and the three completed-run components are additional conditions |
A controlled transition checklist
Confirm the final-boss condition
Record whether Lord of the Cinder was cleared on Normal or Nightmare. This identifies which next difficulty the reference says should be available.
Return to town and inspect the selector
The source restricts switching to town. Read the selected mode before choosing a stage and do not infer selection from an unlocked label.
Protect planned drops and components
Review locks and item handling so the first interesting drop is not lost through a bulk routine. Keep any recipe or Rift-entry component you plan to use.
Observe the full loop
Include a difficult encounter, the town return and restart. Record your actual interruptions instead of applying a multiplier directly to an old hourly result.
Change one condition at a time
If the new mode is unstable, test recovery or a different node separately. Preserve the previous working setup so the comparison remains understandable.
Difficulty questions
Q: Does every higher-difficulty region have level 70 enemies?
Wikily states that enemies outside the Mythic Rift are level 70 on Nightmare and Inferno. The Rift is also level 70 but has its own tier scaling. Online server values remain a separate boundary.
Q: Does 2× experience guarantee twice the XP per hour?
No. That is a source-listed reward multiplier. Your hourly result also depends on encounter time, deaths, town delays and whether the loop resumes.
Q: Can I switch difficulty while farming?
The community source states that difficulty switching is restricted to town. Return to town and inspect the selector in your current build.
Q: Is Item Find a guaranteed-drop percentage?
No. The loot page describes increased rarity weights and their normalization, with different treatment for Divine and Set Runes. Use the dedicated loot-roll guide for the calculation boundary.
